What to focus on
Zones 3, 4 and 5 handle freeze protection this month. Disconnect hoses and protect outdoor faucets, check pipe insulation in unheated areas, winterize the sprinkler system and inspect the roof. Water left in a hose or faucet can freeze, split the pipe inside the wall and flood the house when it thaws. Zones 4 and 5 also close the pool. See preventing frozen pipes, winterizing sprinklers and roof inspections.
Zones 3 and 4 schedule a heating tune-up if the home has a furnace, boiler or heat pump. Booking before the heating season gives a technician time to check the burner, heat exchanger, gas connections and controls (tune-up guide).
In zones 1 and 2, check caulking and weatherstripping around windows and doors (winterizing guide). Zone 2 homes with a fireplace should also get the chimney inspected and swept (chimney guide).
Zones 6 and 7 clean the gutters after the leaves drop and get snow equipment ready. Zones 5 and 6 switch ceiling fans to winter mode, clockwise at low speed. Zone 8 has only the monthly checks this month.
Every month
Test every smoke and CO alarm (alarm guide). With the heat coming on, check the HVAC filter too (filter guide).
The September checklist comes before this one and November follows; the calendar has the full year for your zone.
